Stores that accept PayPal Credit (and what can you use it for)

Do you have PayPal Credit or plan to apply for one?

PayPal Credit is a special financing service from PayPal that allows you to buy items and pay for them in installments.

You can use it to shop at thousands of online retailers that accept PayPal as a payment method.

However, many shops still don’t accept it as a payment option, so it may not be a good choice for some users.

To help you decide if PayPal Credit is worth applying for, we’ve gathered a list of where you can shop with PayPal Credit online. We also explain how to use PayPal Credit in store or online, depending on the merchant.

Make sure to read until the end because you’ll also find tips about how to maximize your PayPal Credit and how it compares to traditional credit cards.

Let’s start.

What Is PayPal Credit?

PayPal Credit, formerly known as Bill Me Later, is a digital line of credit that you can use for purchases at thousands of online stores that accept PayPal.

If you don’t have the money to pay for an item in full, you can finance it through PayPal Credit.

PayPal Credit works just like any other form of credit:

  • You make purchases at merchants that accept PayPal Credit and choose it as your payment method.
  • Then, you repay the amount you borrowed to PayPal over time according to the terms of your agreement with them.

Unlike some other forms of credit that are issued by banks and credit unions, PayPal Credit isn’t issued as a physical card—it’s simply added to your existing PayPal account.

Once you’re approved for a PayPal Credit account, you’ll be able to access it via your existing PayPal login.

Which Currencies Does PayPal Support?

As of 2022, PayPal supports 25 world currencies, including the following:

  • US Dollar
  • Euro
  • British Pound
  • Canadian Dollar
  • Australian Dollar
  • Brazilian Real
  • Czech Koruna
  • Danish Krone
  • Japanese Yen

To see what currencies are supported in your country, go to PayPal’s currency converter tool and select the currency you want to convert from and to.

If a currency doesn’t appear in the list, PayPal doesn’t support it at this time.

What Are PayPal Credit’s Qualifications?

The qualifications for PayPal Credit are pretty basic:

  • You need to be at least 18 years old and a US resident.
  • You need to have a PayPal account in good standing — meaning your account is open and not past due or restricted.
  • You need a good credit score.

Out of the three, the biggest factor in getting approved for PayPal Credit is your credit score.

Why?

Because PayPal offers its digital credit line through Synchrony Bank.

Just like any bank, Synchrony will pull a hard inquiry on your score before approving your application.

While there’s no official score requirement for PayPal Credit, banks usually approve only those who have a score of 670 above.

How Does PayPal Credit Compare to Traditional Credit Cards?

While both PayPal Credit and a traditional credit card allow you to make purchases online, one isn’t necessarily better than the other.

It really depends on what you’re looking for in a payment method.

Here’s a quick comparison:

Interest rates

PayPal Credit’s standard Annual Percentage Rate (APR) is 23.99%, while some credit cards offer APRs as low as 0% for an introductory period and then jump to an APR of 15% or higher thereafter.

Depending on how much time you need to pay off a purchase and the length of any promotional periods, using a credit card instead of PayPal Credit may save you money on interest charges.

Credit Limit

PayPal Credit offers a $250 credit limit upon approval, which can be increased over time.

In 2020, the average American credit limit is nearly 30 times that (more than $30, 000 across all credit cards), but PayPal Credit is designed for small purchases.

Merchant Network

PayPal Credit is accepted at over a thousand online stores, including eBay and Overstock.

Traditional credit cards are accepted at more than 17 million locations worldwide, including nearly every business in America.

Other Fees

PayPal Credit is free to use — if you pay your bill on time.

If you don’t, PayPal charges interest rates comparable to those of credit cards, from 19.99% to 26.99%. There is also a late fee starting at $2 if you miss the due date for your minimum payment.

Credit cards charge interest and fees on unpaid balances as well.

However, many credit cards also charge an annual fee of $50 or more just for carrying them in your wallet — something that PayPal Credit doesn’t do.

Convenience

The most obvious difference between PayPal Credit and a traditional credit card is convenience.

With a traditional card, you can complete a transaction anywhere that accepts credit cards, as long as you have plastic in your wallet or purse.

With PayPal Credit, you need an internet connection and an account with PayPal Credit itself — two things that may not be available all the time.

Rewards and bonuses

Credit cards often offer rewards like cash back or miles for your spending, but PayPal Credit doesn’t.

There’s one exception: you get six months of interest-free financing on purchases of $99 or more.

However, this is just a break from the standard interest rate — not a reward or bonus.

Effect on your credit score

Credit cards are a great way to build your credit if you use them wisely. They typically do so by reporting to Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, aka the three major credit bureaus.

Unfortunately, Paypal Credit doesn’t report to any of these credit bureaus. As a result, you won’t be able to improve your credit score by using Paypal Credit, even if you make all your payments on time.

On the flip side, falling behind on your PayPal Credit payments won’t affect your credit score. But do this with traditional credit cards, and it can damage your credit score and make it hard to rebuild.

Is PayPal Credit right for you?

Overall, treat PayPal Credit like any other credit card: before you apply and spend, do the math.

As we mentioned earlier, PayPal Credit isn’t a good choice if you’re looking to improve your credit score or take advantage of rewards and bonuses offered by other credit cards.

However, if you will use the card only for smaller purchases online and pay off the balance quickly, you may find PayPal Credit useful. Finally, use credit responsibly, whether you’re using PayPal Credit or a traditional credit card.
