Get the Credit Repair Information you need to Avoid Scams!
If you need credit repair information, you are not alone. Many people want to be able to have a perfect, spotless credit history. Unfortunately, a lot of us do not have perfect credit and could easily use help to repair it. While we all can agree that cleaning up our credit history is a great thing, this can easily turn into much bigger trouble if you get help from a company that turns out to be a scam. Sadly, the amount of credit repair scams are continuing to grow steadily.
What is a Credit Repair Scam?If you watch television, read the newspaper or surf the Internet, you have probably seen and read advertisements claiming that phrases like "Credit problems? No problem!" or things such as "We can erase your bad credit, fast – 100% guaranteed." You might have even had to deal with a pesky telemarketer calling your home and offering to help you repair your credit. While it looks like these companies are trying to help, do yourself a favor and save your money. Don’t fall for these statements, as they are generally scams. These companies are looking for you to pay them for a task that can’t be done quickly, at least not legally. They will say that they can clean up your credit history immediately so that you can get a loan to buy a car, a house or other things. As good as they sound, only time and effort can truly improve the score on your credit report. In the end, these companies take your money and run.
What to watch for if you hire a Credit Repair company...With this said, you shouldn’t assume that all credit repair companies are scams. If you are worried about hiring one of these companies because you are concerned that it could be a scam, there are a few things you can look out for. First, do not work with a company that wants you to put money down before they repair your credit. Also, be wary of companies that don’t tell you your legal rights and what you can do to improve your credit on your own. Don’t do business with a company that tells you not to directly contact a credit reporting agency. Stay away from companies that tell you to invent a new credit identity by using an Employer Identification Number or any other means. To avoid these types of scams, you have to educate yourself, or at least know a little about them. Remember that rebuilding credit can take years, not weeks or months. Depending on the type of credit repairs you are seeking, you may be able to do the work yourself. Make sure to check out our Do It Yourself Credit Repair Guide. If you think you have fallen for a scam, pull out of it immediately and take legal action. If you need additional help or credit repair information, contact the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.
